The 20% of your ad budget you’re probably wasting
Every Google Ads account we inherit gets the same five checks in week one. In most of them, somewhere between 15% and 30% of the monthly budget is buying clicks that were never going to convert. Not because the account is badly run — because these leaks are quiet, and nobody looks for them until someone asks.
1. Search terms nobody audits
Broad and phrase match will find queries you never intended to bid on. The search terms report is where you see them, and it is the single most profitable half hour in paid search. On one real-estate account we added roughly 900 negative keywords in the first fortnight; cost per qualified lead fell 44% without touching bids.
2. Conversion tracking that lies
If your account optimises toward “form view” instead of “form submitted”, or counts one enquiry three times, then every automated bid decision is built on a false signal. Verify what each conversion action actually fires on before you trust a single performance number.
3. Brand traffic taking credit
Performance Max and broad campaigns happily absorb searches for your own company name — traffic you would have won for free — then report a flattering return. Exclude brand terms from prospecting campaigns and report them separately, or you will never know what new demand actually costs.
Most “underperforming” accounts are not underperforming. They are mis-measured.
4. The landing page nobody blames
A perfect click on a weak page still fails, and the cost shows up as an ads problem. Match the page to the promise in the ad, put one obvious action on it, and make it fast. This is routinely the biggest single lever on cost per lead — bigger than bid strategy.
5. Budget spread evenly across unequal campaigns
Even spend across campaigns with very different margins is a quiet tax. Shift budget weekly toward what is proving profitable and cap what is not. Small, frequent reallocation beats a quarterly overhaul.
What to do this week
Pull your last 30 days of search terms, verify one conversion action end to end, and check whether brand traffic sits inside a prospecting campaign. If all three are clean, your account is in better shape than most. If not, that is your 20%. Ask us for a free audit and we will show you the numbers.
