THE CLIENT

Twenty years of good work, defined by one bad headline.

Meridian Legal is a twenty-two-lawyer firm spanning corporate, employment, property, and family law — the kind of practice built on two decades of referrals, repeat corporate clients, and a courtroom reputation its partners had earned case by case. Like many established firms, it had treated marketing as beneath the work: a static website, a dormant blog, and a Google profile nobody in the firm had ever opened.

That indifference became a crisis in one news cycle. A commercial dispute involving a former client generated a news article that — while reporting allegations later resolved in the firm's favour — sat at position two whenever anyone searched the firm's name. The follow-up story clearing the firm ran three paragraphs and ranked nowhere. Prospective clients performing basic due diligence met the allegation, not the resolution; referral partners started mentioning it apologetically. Measured instructions from new clients fell 23% in two quarters — the firm's first decline in a decade.

THE CHALLENGE

You can't delete a news article. You can outrank it.

The hard constraint shaped everything: the article was legitimate journalism on a high-authority news domain. No takedown was possible, and pursuing one would have invited a second story. The only honest strategy was competitive — surround it. Google's page one for the firm's name had ten results; the firm controlled exactly two of them (its homepage and a directory listing). The other eight were up for grabs, and the news site was winning by default because nothing else about the firm existed to rank.

The review profile deepened the problem. Thirty-eight Google reviews at 3.9 stars — respectable work punctuated by a handful of one-star reviews from opposing parties in disputes (an occupational hazard for litigators that most firms never counter) — and not one response from the firm. For a service bought on trust, the visible evidence contradicted twenty years of actual performance.

And beneath the crisis lay the opportunity the crisis forced the partners to see: the firm had no content presence at all in the searches that bring law firms clients — "employment contract review", "commercial lease dispute", "divorce jurisdiction UAE". Competitors with half Meridian's expertise owned those pages. Fixing the name search was defence; winning the practice-area searches was the growth the firm had been leaving on the table for years.

THE APPROACH

Surround the story, rebuild the proof, then win the searches that pay.

Reputation repair that only buries a story leaves a firm exactly as fragile as before. Our plan ran defence and offence on the same engine: every asset created to reclaim the name search was also built to earn practice-area rankings, so the recovery would end with the firm stronger than it was before the article.

PHASE 1 · MONTHS 1–3
Own the name search

A coordinated asset build: partner profiles, firm pages on authoritative legal directories, structured social profiles, and interviews in legal publications — ten credible candidates competing for the eight winnable page-one slots.

PHASE 2 · MONTHS 2–6
Rebuild the proof

Compliant review generation from the firm's deep bench of satisfied clients, every review answered, and the one-star outliers from opposing parties given calm, factual responses that let readers judge for themselves.

PHASE 3 · MONTHS 4–10
Win the money searches

Partner-authored guides for the questions clients actually search, published weekly and structured for both Google and AI-search citation. Defence became a growth channel.

INSIDE THE WORK

What ten months of the retainer actually bought.

Ten assets for ten results

Outranking a news domain takes assets Google independently trusts. We built and optimised a portfolio: rich partner profiles on the firm's site, completed listings on the legal directories lawyers actually rank on, a properly structured LinkedIn presence for the firm and its four senior partners, contributed expert commentary in two legal publications, and the firm's first knowledge-panel-eligible entity markup. Each asset was legitimate on its own merits — no link schemes, no microsites, nothing a competitor could report. By month six, the news article had slipped to position seven; by month nine it left page one for the firm's plain-name search entirely.

Reviews from the clients who never thought to leave one

Law firms sit on a paradox: their happiest clients — the acquisition that closed, the custody resolved — are the least likely to think of leaving a review. We built a compliant ask into matter-closing: when a file closes well, the responsible lawyer's assistant sends a short personal note with a review link. No incentives, no filtering, full bar-rule compliance reviewed by the firm itself. Review volume tripled within four months. Just as important, every review got a response — and the hostile one-stars from opposing parties received measured, factual replies that repeatedly turned a smear into a credibility exhibit.

Monitoring that never sleeps

Reputation work is a standing guard, not a project. Brand-mention monitoring now alerts the firm within hours of any new review, article, or forum mention. Twice during the engagement it mattered: a copycat review from a disgruntled opposing party (removed within days for policy violation) and a scraped article republishing the original allegations (de-indexed after an outreach the monitoring made possible). Both would previously have sat unnoticed for months, quietly costing instructions.

Partner-authored content, engineered for search

The growth engine was forty-one guides across the four practice areas, each answering a question clients genuinely search: what a mandatory settlement conference involves, how end-of-service gratuity is calculated, what landlords can and cannot deduct. Partners supplied the expertise in recorded interviews; our writers turned them into clear, structured guides; the named partner reviewed every word before publication. Google rewards exactly this — demonstrated expertise from identifiable authors — and so do AI engines: by month ten, the firm was cited in AI-generated answers for eleven of its priority questions, visibility its competitors haven't begun to build.

A referral network given fresh evidence

A law firm's oldest channel — referrals — had been quietly damaged too, as referrers hesitated to send clients toward a firm whose search results raised questions. The recovery was made visible to that network deliberately: a quarterly firm update sharing new guides, notable matters (anonymised), and directory recognitions went to every referral partner. Referred instructions recovered before search-driven ones did — the earliest signal in the data that the repair was working where it mattered.

Measured like litigation: evidence, not adjectives

Partners at Meridian bill by the hour and think in evidence, so the dashboard spoke their language: position tracking for every page-one result on the name search, review velocity and rating trend, rankings for the forty-one guides, and — decisive for the partnership vote that extended the engagement — instructions per month tagged by source. The firm could watch defence and offence in the same view: the article sliding down as the guides climbed, and the instruction count following both.

The recovery outgrew the crisis. Instructions didn't just return to their pre-article level — they finished 64% above it, because the machinery built to defend the name turned out to be the growth engine the firm had never invested in. The article is still online, exactly where journalism should be. It just no longer speaks for the firm.

They never promised to make the article disappear — that honesty is why we hired them. Ten months later, our search results finally look like our track record. And the guides they built bring us clients the article years never did.

WHAT WE LEARNED

Three lessons any professional firm can steal.

01
Build your page one before you need it.

Meridian's crisis was survivable because the repair was possible — but it took ten months that a firm with existing profiles, reviews, and content would have needed three for. The cheapest reputation insurance is owning your own search results while nothing is wrong.

02
Respond to the reviews you can't remove.

The hostile one-stars from opposing parties hurt most when they stood unanswered. A calm, factual response converts a reader's doubt into respect — prospects repeatedly told the firm the review responses were why they called. Silence, in reputation, always testifies against you.

03
The best defence assets are offence assets.

Everything built to push one article down — profiles, guides, reviews, citations — now generates instructions on its own. Reputation budgets feel like pure cost until you insist every defensive asset also earn its keep. Then the crisis pays for the growth engine.
